St Giles House, Reading

Refurbishment of a disused office building into 150 student units, with basement car parking. The development has great social spaces consisting of cinema, gym and communal dining areas with kitchen for entertaining and group meals.

Duties: Full detail design for the M&E contractor, including SBEM and EPC.

Bishop Street, Leicester

The project was a conversion of an existing building, with two new storeys of accommodation constructed on the roof. The development consists of around 90 student units. The building was a disused post office with many original features, this proved to be a challenge during design development stage.

Ashby Square, Loughborough

Client: Waldron Developments

Architect: RG+P Leicester

New build student development in the centre of Loughborough. The brief was to design an electrically heated building but as efficient as possible to keep running costs and carbon emissions low. This was done primarily by working with RG+P to enhance the building fabric and air tightness to reach compliance.

Duties: Full detail design including site monitoring, SAP and EPCs.

Redvers House, Sheffield

Client: Minton Group

BEC are currently undertaking four projects for Minton Group, with around 550 student units being created. Redvers House is a 14-storey tower block in Sheffield City centre.

Unusual for student developments, this is a very high end project with full comfort cooling to all rooms, heat recovery demand led ventilation and 100MB broadband to all units. Also, quite unusually, the main heat source for the building is from Sheffield’s district heating main.

Duties: Full detail design, including thermal modelling and site monitoring.

Lillie House, Leicester

Conversion of existing disused office block into student accommodation with new build additional storey on the roof. The development consists of around 50 student beds in a combination of studios, one and two bed flats and cluster flats with shared kitchens and lounges. The heating is electric, with hot water being delivered from central gas fired water heaters.
