STERIS Watermead, Leicester

A 6000m2 new build warehouse, factory and office building at the Watermead Business Park, near Leicester. This is a particularly highly services building containing factory and R&D facilities for decontamination and sterilization testing of surgical equipment. The systems designed were wide ranging, and included clean steam generators, compressed air, process ventilation.  We designed the mechanical services systems to meet high standards of sustainability, including heat recovery ventilation for the entire factory and offices, and adiabatic cooling which should achieve 80% energy saving.

Office and Industrial Unit, Mansfield

Client: SuKe Properties Ltd

BEC completed a full detailed design for mechanical and electrical services for the development of a new factory located within Millennium Business Park in Mansfield. The new facility comprises of engineering, welding, workshop, warehouse and office areas.

Duties: Full detail design to RIBA stage 4 of mechanical and electrical services.

Lidl RDC, Exeter

Client: Winvic / Walter Miles Building Services

BIM Level II, new 50,000m2 regional distribution centre catering for the storage and dispatch of supermarket items to 51 stores across the south west region. Lidl’s largest distribution centre so far with separate temperature-controlled areas ranging from -20°C to 18°C for the storage of different food types from frozen foods to fresh fruit and vegetables. Complete with a three-storey office block incorporating catering facilities, changing rooms, conference rooms, training rooms, drivers lounges and logistics offices. Constructed just off the A30 east of Exeter on the Exeter gateway business park.

Duties: Full building services detail design, including thermal modelling, specialist anti-heave underfloor heating, centralised ventilation systems, specialist battery charge ventilation systems, chilled water and VRF air conditioning.

Vulcan Works, Northampton

Architect: Purcell

Currently working with Purcell to renovate and convert an existing disused Victorian shoe and leather factory into creative workshops with a working tannery and research facility at its heart. Retention of existing facades and structure are an important factor. Secondary steelwork frames were designed around the main factory areas of the building to allow for large amounts of M&E services to be distributed in these areas, whilst retaining the existing timber trusses and maintaining the integrity of the existing heritage without damage or increased structural loading.

Duties: Full M&E detail design.

Round Wood of Mayfield

This project was completed on an existing site and consisted of the installation of a new 510kW biomass boiler and plant room to provide heating and hot water to an adjacent warehouse and heating to two kilns for the purposes of drying wood.

BEC provided full mechanical design for the heating system and the biomass boiler all designed to meet the renewable heat incentive requirements. The boiler plant included a 10,000l storage vessel and 14,000l of expansion to meet the higher temperature operating conditions of log kilns. Heating to the warehouse was provided by unit heaters and destratification fans.

Duties: Full detailed mechanical design.

DHL Distribution Centre, Derby

New build 48,000 m2 distribution centre and offices for DHL at East Midlands Airport. BEC carried out the full detail design of lighting, power, fire alarm, security, data and containment. The project was carried out using REVIT to ensure clash detection is highlighted at design stage.

Duties: Full detail design of electrical services for TJ Hall.

Leicester Bakery

New build 4,000m2 bakery and offices. BEC have designed the M&E services strategy for both the base building and to accommodate the production lines. Ventilation being a huge challenge as the client brief was to provide heat recovery from the ovens to heat as much of the factory as practically possible. The roof of the main bakery and the roofs of five smaller food production units on site are designed with a 2,000m2 photovoltaic (PV) system to meet Leicester City Council’s 18% renewables target.

Duties: M&E strategy design and client’s representative for reviewing the M&E contractors detail design drawings and calculations.
